The hand carving detail of hardstone cameos such as the one presented here is what enchanted the Emperor Napoléon Bonaparte. In fact, he was so enthralled by their beauty that he founded a school in Paris to teach the art of carving cameo to young apprentices. He even wore one of them to his own wedding!
This bezel set sardonyx cameo was created later, around 1880. It was crafted by a masterful carver who took special care in the wonderful detail of the woman's portrait, her hair and the decorative elements in her hair, the depth of the profile, the condition and the material used add to the value of a cameo. And this cameo is in perfect condition. The sardonyx is almost translucent. When the cameo is backlit, you see NO stress lines whatsoever.
The antique frame has been adorned with a circle of demi pearls featuring high luster and thick nacre. No pearls are missing. The luscious decorative pearls are well matched, measure approximately 2.8mm each, and add incredible appeal to the cameo.
Cameos are very fragile, and you should be careful when handling them. Keep it in a dry place in a soft cloth, never leave it to soak. Keep it away from bright lights and heat. Be gentle with it, and it will be there for you for years to enjoy.
