Plique à jour enameling technique is very challenging. It consists in using transparent enamel, reminiscent of stained glass windows and fusing them together with metal. The technique demands much time, and the rate of failure is extremely high. Thus, the special training and craftsmanship it requires makes these pieces very rare and valuable.
Concerning this lovely medal, the metal used to fuse the various pieces of enamel plique à jour together to form the Virgin's halo is 18K solid gold, as the entire medal is crafted in 18-carat solid bright gold. The contrast with the two shades of blue of the translucent enamel, blue being the color of Mary, is incredibly successful.
The pendant features a date and two initials. The latter refers to the previous owner of the medal and the former was probably his/her date of birth (May 4, 1922). It also gives us the best indication we could hope to have about the time of the creation of this beautiful medal.
The portrait of Mary is embossed, in a repoussé technique, giving it a dynamic structure. We have added an 18K solid gold cable chain in perfect contion. There are no restoration nor parts missing. Both pieces are in excellent vintage condition. Any white or cloudy spots on the images are glare and/or photographic obstructions.
