DESCRIPTION:

This wonderful period piece dates to the Victorian period, but since it is French, we will define it as a wonderful example of Napoléon III jewelry. And, as many of them made in France, it is crafted in 18K solid gold.

The locket is soberly but elegantly decorated. Looking at the front of the locket, the center features a cartouche amidst many scrolls and volutes. The locket is rectangular with rounded edge which gives it an attractive and soft appearance.

The locket opens without effort to reveal a very thick beveled glass divider. A favorite photograph could easily find a place in this fine memento. The back of the locket is etched with a repeated motif also in a cartouche.

This heirloom locket has several small dents commensurate with its age, but is generally in very good condition with perfectly working hinges, and whether you choose to wear it on a chain or on a simple black cord, it makes a very beautiful pendant in 18K solid gold.

The locket is sold without a chain. Please, ask us if you are interested in purchasing a solid 18-carat yellow gold chain to match this lovely piece.

*Information on gold jewelry:

- 24K gold is pure gold. (it is not really used in jewellery because it is too soft and not practical for daily wear.)
-18K gold contains 18 parts gold and 6 parts of one or more additional metals, making it 75% gold. This level of fineness is used extensively in French and Italian jewelry and in most quality pieces)
-14K gold contains 14 parts gold and 10 parts of one or more additional metals, making it 58.3% gold. (It is used extensively in the US)
-12K gold contains 12 parts gold and 12 parts of one or more additional metals, making it 50% gold.
-10K gold contains 10 parts gold and 14 parts of one or more additional metals, making it 41.7% gold. 10K gold is the minimum standard that can be called "gold" in the United States.
Antique jewelry and rare items often contain the lower level of fineness, but their value is based on a myriad of other factors.
